How Does 3D Laser Scanning Work?

3D site and building scanning use LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) which involves shooting a laser over an area and recording the depth of the surface area. A pulse of laser light is scanned across an area and the amount of time it takes for the reflection to return to the scanner is recorded to create a representational point for where the pulse hit the surface of an object. These points are collected in the computer to create a point cloud. Point clouds are used to create specs for technicians, engineers, architects, and designers to use when working on construction projects.
